How to Renew CalFresh Benefits in Los Angeles County

A renewal plan starts with the certification end date, a completed recertification, and a way to follow up on the interview or proof request.

Treat renewal as a separate step

CalFresh recertification is the process for asking the county to continue an existing case for another certification period. It is different from an initial application and from a periodic report such as SAR 7. The California Department of Social Services (CDSS) instructions say a household must submit its recertification application and complete an interview before its certification period ends to continue benefits without an interruption. Use the end date shown in the household’s notice as the working deadline; do not assume a web search result or someone else’s schedule applies to your case. [1]

Start by opening the latest notice and writing down the certification end date, any requested interview date, and the official way to return forms or documents. If the notice is missing, unreadable, or appears inconsistent with an online account, contact Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) and ask which date and action apply to the case. This guide explains the published process; only DPSS can confirm an individual case status.

Submit the renewal and keep a record

The CDSS CF 37 instructions say the signed application can be submitted to the county in person, by mail, by fax, or online, and that BenefitsCal is an online route in counties that support it. In Los Angeles County, DPSS also lists a phone-based Renewal Line that can complete a CalFresh recertification form with a telephonic signature. Choose a channel that works for the household, then save a submission confirmation, dated receipt, fax confirmation, or brief call note. [1] [2]

Answer the questions as accurately as possible and keep a copy or screenshot of what was sent when practical. If a question is unclear, use the notice or ask DPSS before guessing. A completed form is not the same as a final eligibility decision: the county may still need to interview the household or request documents.

Prepare for the interview and proof requests

CDSS describes an interview as part of recertification. The state instructions say most interviews are by phone, while an in-person or other arrangement can be made with the county. They advise households to provide proof of changed circumstances when available, with examples such as income, who buys and prepares food together, or housing costs. They also say to keep the interview even if a document is not yet available, because the county may be able to help obtain needed proof. [1]

A useful preparation sheet can list what changed, when it changed, and what record might show it. For example: “work hours changed in September; I can provide recent pay stubs” or “rent changed after a move; I have the new lease.” These are prompts for a conversation, not a list of documents every case must submit. Follow the specific notice and ask the worker what proof is still needed and how to send it.

Use the County’s renewal channel when you need help

The DPSS Customer Service Center telephone menu identifies option 3 as the Renewal Line. Its listed services include completing CalFresh renewal or recertification by phone with telephonic signature, completing a renewal interview, and helping submit requested verification. DPSS lists (866) 613-3777 as its toll-free number; local numbers and language choices are also posted. Menu details and hours can change, so check the official page before calling. [2] [3]

For a phone call, have the case notice and any case number available if accessible, then ask directly: “Is this my recertification period, what is the deadline, what steps are still open, and how should I send the requested proof?” Do not send sensitive documents through an unverified number or link. If phone service or internet access is difficult, DPSS lists office locations and customer-service options on its official contact pages. [3]

A worked example: separate sent, scheduled, and decided

Suppose a notice gives a certification end date of November 30 and asks for an interview. A household submits the recertification form on November 12, saves the confirmation, and receives an interview appointment for November 20. A pay record requested for the interview is delayed. The practical checklist is: confirm the form was received; attend the interview or contact DPSS promptly if a new time is needed; explain which proof is delayed; ask how and where to submit it; and record the answer. The household should not treat “form submitted” as “renewal approved,” nor skip the interview because a document is missing.

If the deadline has passed or benefits have stopped, contact DPSS promptly and ask whether the case can still be recertified or whether a new application is needed. The state instructions warn that late filing can interrupt benefits and describe different treatment when an application is more than 30 days past the certification end date; because that rule comes from a form marked 2016, confirm current case-specific instructions with DPSS rather than relying on this article for a determination.
