Define Interim Housing in Context

Interim housing is temporary housing or shelter intended to provide a place to stay while a person works toward a longer-term housing arrangement.

The meaning of “interim”

Interim means serving for a period between one situation and another. In housing discussions, interim housing generally refers to a temporary place to stay while someone considers or pursues a longer-term option. It may offer more structure or services than an emergency overnight stay, but the precise arrangement depends on the program.

The term describes the housing’s intended role, not a guaranteed timeline. A program may have its own rules about length of stay, available support, and how residents move on. Ask the provider what “interim” means in that specific setting, including whether residents have a defined review date or an expected transition plan.

How it differs from permanent housing

Permanent housing generally describes an ongoing housing arrangement rather than a temporary stage. That distinction concerns the expected purpose of the arrangement; it does not mean every permanent home is guaranteed forever or that interim residents automatically receive a permanent unit. Each option has its own terms, responsibilities, and availability.

For example, a person might stay in a temporary program while searching for a rental home. The interim arrangement may give them a stable place to sleep during the search, but they would still need to understand how long they may remain and what happens if the search takes longer than expected. A separate long-term placement would require its own process and agreement.

Questions that make the term practical

Ask whether the space is a shared room, private room, or separate unit; what costs or contributions apply; and what services are offered. Confirm rules for guests, belongings, pets, accessibility, and household members. Ask how the program handles a missed appointment, a change in income, or a need for more time.

In Los Angeles, the local housing response includes outreach, interim housing, and permanent housing as distinct stages in a broader service system. A stage label can help explain a program’s role, but it does not answer every question about a specific bed or unit. Before making plans, get the provider’s written terms, the expected review process, and the contact for questions.
