A renewal course adds Spanish
On June 25, 2024, the California Department of Motor Vehicles announced that drivers renewing a license with a knowledge-test requirement could choose the online eLearning course in English or Spanish. The course was an option for eligible renewals, not the testing route for a first California license. [1]
The course had seven interactive modules, each followed by a quiz that participants could retake. It was available 24 hours a day on an internet-connected computer, laptop, tablet or mobile device. English had been offered since 2022. The DMV said more than 45,000 Californians had completed the course on average in recent months. [1]
The June 2024 release estimated about 45 minutes to complete the course. It also said some customers would still need an office visit to provide identity and residency documents, have a photo taken, give a thumbprint, complete a vision screening and receive their license document. The online course could reduce time spent on the renewal transaction at the office, according to the release. [1]
Spanish joined English in June 2024. The current DMV page has updated language options and completion estimates. Original-license testing follows a separate process.

Today’s estimate and language options
The DMV’s current preparation page lists the renewal course in English, Spanish and Traditional Chinese, with Mandarin audio for the Chinese version. It describes a self-paced, unmonitored course available on an internet-connected device at any time during the one-year renewal application period. The current estimate is about 20 to 30 minutes, compared with the roughly 45 minutes stated in the June 2024 release. [1] [2]
Customers select eLearning in their renewal application and receive a link by email. The course fulfills a knowledge-test requirement for a renewal; the DMV’s 2024 release listed additional in-person steps that may still be needed to finish the transaction. [2] [1]
Original licenses follow a separate process
For an original driver’s license, the DMV requires applicants to pass a multiple-choice knowledge test, with up to three attempts before they must reapply. Applicants also take a vision test, and first-time applicants must pass a behind-the-wheel test. Renewal eLearning is identified as a possible testing option when renewing, not as a replacement for original-license testing. [3]
The 2024 announcement also described a separate monitored online knowledge test requiring a webcam and identity verification, available during specified weekday hours. That announcement concerned the online test at that time; it does not establish current first-license availability. The current DMV materials describe original-license testing separately from renewal eLearning. [1] [3]
