Use a Library Computer for a Job Search

Prepare for a shared computer session, handle files carefully, and close accounts when finished.

Prepare before you sit down

A little preparation can make a limited computer session more useful. Bring a written list of tasks, such as finding postings, updating a resume, or submitting one application. If you need account access, make sure you know the correct sign-in details. Avoid writing passwords where another person could easily see them, and do not share them with anyone offering unsolicited help.

Keep a copy of your resume and any needed information in a place you can access safely. A personal storage device may be useful if the library permits it, but follow the library’s rules and scan files before opening them. You can also write down non-sensitive details, such as job titles to search for, to reduce time spent navigating.

Work in a deliberate order

Begin with the task that matters most. For example, first find a posting and note its deadline and instructions; next tailor a resume copy; then complete the application. Save drafts often if the site allows it, and check whether it confirms that an application was submitted. A filled-in form is not necessarily a completed submission.

When entering personal information, confirm that the website address and employer are the ones you intended to use. Use caution with requests for sensitive information, payment, or identity documents, especially early in an application. If something seems unusual, pause and seek reliable advice before proceeding.

Protect documents and accounts

Use filenames that help you identify the document without exposing unnecessary personal details. A file named “Resume-Customer-Service” is more practical on screen than “final.” Avoid saving passwords in the browser or choosing an option that keeps you signed in. If you download a document to the public computer, remember where it went and whether it contains personal information.

When possible, save work to your own account or approved storage, then verify that the file opens. Do not leave copies on the desktop, in a downloads folder, or in a public printer queue. If you print, collect every page promptly and check whether printing has a fee or a limit.

Finish with a privacy check

Sign out of email, job boards, and any other accounts you used. Close browser windows, clear saved sign-in prompts if the browser offers them, and remove downloaded files you created on that computer. Do not rely on closing a tab alone to end a session. If you used a printer, collect or cancel any remaining jobs.

Before leaving, confirm you have your documents and notes. Record the posting, employer, date, and next step in a private application tracker. If you need more help using a computer, ask library staff about available assistance and local computer-use rules. A consistent routine helps you work efficiently while limiting what remains on a shared device.
