Metro ended its wildfire emergency fare holiday after January 26, 2025, and resumed fare collection January 27. A Board-approved LIFE extension offered eligible fire-affected riders 90 days of free rides, then 20 free regional rides monthly for up to six months after enrollment.

Fare collection resumed as targeted aid began
On January 23, 2025, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority Board approved changes to reduced-fare eligibility for people economically affected by the Eaton and Pacific Palisades fires. Metro said emergency free fares would continue through Sunday, January 26, with fare collection resuming at the beginning of service Monday, January 27. The change ended the broad emergency fare holiday and introduced assistance tied to enrollment in the LIFE extension. [1]
The extension began with a TAP card preloaded with 90 days of unlimited free rides on participating transit systems in Los Angeles County. After those first 90 days, Metro said 20 free regional rides would be added automatically each month for the rest of the program. Riders who used the 20 rides could add stored value; Metro described free rides after three rides in a day and 11 in a week. [1]
The wildfire extension then provided monthly rides and expired six months after enrollment. It was separate from the ordinary LIFE program.

The wildfire extension had a six-month limit
The wildfire extension’s benefits expired six months after enrollment. Metro said people enrolled might be eligible for another reduced-fare program after their benefits ended. The announcement did not promise automatic continuation, and its listed resource-center enrollment dates in late January and early February 2025 were part of the original response. Metro also offered online applications and help at those centers. [1]
Metro’s LIFE page, checked October 28, 2026, describes the ordinary program separately: qualifying riders receive 90 days of free rides, then can choose 20 rides each month or discounted passes on participating agencies. That current program description is distinct from the wildfire extension’s six-month benefit limit. [2]
A change for riders seeking assistance
The January change shifted the fare policy from free rides for the general public during the emergency period to a targeted benefit for eligible fire-affected riders who enrolled. The first 90 days offered unlimited free rides on participating systems; later monthly rides and fare capping provided a different structure. [1]
For riders traveling to appointments or utility-assistance services, the distinction mattered: after January 26, ordinary fares resumed, while eligible enrollees could use the extension’s benefits under its terms. Metro’s announcement described the program and the enrollment help available, but did not report how many people enrolled or how many rides they took. [1]
